Gotham 360 Helps Major University Save Money and Earn Public Recognition for Outstanding Energy Efficiency
With tight budgets and the fiscal pressure of controlling non-profit expenses, this major University sought help from Gotham-360 to reduce energy costs. A progressive and successful energy management plan was developed and implemented, saving the client money and earning them public recognition for outstanding energy efficiency.
The Client is a large University with more than 7 million square feet of mixed-use real estate in a campus within an urban environment. Gotham 360 helped this University develop and implement an extremely progressive and successful energy management and sustainability program.
The Challenge for the client was overcoming high energy costs within the extreme fiscal pressures and tight budgets faced by the non-profit University. Gotham 360's objective in this pursuit was to help the University by developing and implementing a successful energy management program that combined the following:
◄ bill verification & auditing
◄ cost avoidance
◄ facility audits
◄ building benchmarking
◄ interval data profiling
◄ web-based reporting
◄ change in approach to deregulated energy purchasing across all fuels
◄ This effort involved the highest levels of leadership within the University, as well as student and faculty participation.
The Solution involved Gotham 360 consultants segmenting the program rollout into a phased approach. In the initial phase, valuable historical utility data was gathered and input into Gotham 360’s client energy database. With this foundation, a thorough understanding of the University’s campus-wide energy usage and costs was obtained. The tools and reporting provided by Gotham 360 enabled the client to accurately measure, track, analyze, benchmark, and report their energy usage, total costs, and cost escalations. This allowed for more informed planning and strategic decision making.
Using the data collected, the second phase of the program was put into place. This included identifying equipment problems, inefficient facilities, and poor behavior patterns. Finding and solving these problems immediately saved the client thousands of dollars through avoided utility costs and consumption.
In the third phase, Gotham 360 performed an evaluation of protocols used by University Finance personnel to develop budgets. Adjustments were made to these protocols which enhanced the accuracy of budget projections and reduced total cost variance. Gotham 360 also assessed past energy purchasing and introduced a new approach to buying energy supply that would reduce total cost volatility and ensure budget stability.
The Results of the energy management plan implemented by Gotham 360 saved the client in excess of $1 Million. With public recognition of their outstanding energy efficiency efforts, the client has expanded their involvement with Gotham 360 to include the development of greenhouse gas inventories and subsequent greenhouse gas reduction planning. Gotham 360 is also helping the University pursue participation in an economic development energy discount program and the development of clean onsite cogeneration. |
