Renewables | Community Solar | Remote Net Metering

March 19, 2019

Time & Location

Mar 19, 5:30 PM – 8:00 PM NYIT 11th Floor Auditorium, 16 W 61st St, New York, NY 10023, USA

About The Event

New renewable energy projects, both solar and wind, seem to be built more frequently than ever. Utilities and large companies have been signing contracts all over the country, but what can homeowners and businesses do in the NY area if they don't have the space for a windfarm or a solar array? New regulations and new companies have sprung up to create local renewable energy projects that allow customers to buy their production. Called community energy projects, these developers have opened up a whole new opportunity for smaller customers to buy their power from renewable resources. This session will explore the technical, regulatory and business developments behind community energy.

This Pro Tour will offer attendees a first look at one of the newest Passive House projects in New York City –an innovative fifteen-story building providing 154-units of sustainable housing.

This event will be hosted by Curtis + Ginsberg Architects, the firm behind the design of this ambitious project. Officially known as Park Avenue Green, the building provides much needed low-income housing to the Melrose neighborhood of the Bronx while incorporating state-of-the-art building technology to create a community of environmentally comfortable homes. The ground floor also houses a 4,300-square-foot community facility for a not-for-profit, providing affordable studio and gallery space for local artists.

Along with its highly insulated and thoroughly sealed building envelope, the design incorporates storm resiliency features and includes cogeneration, an extremely efficient variable refrigerant flow (VRF) heating and cooling system, and an array of photovoltaic panels on the roof.

The event will begin with a presentation in the building’s community room, where the hosting firm will deliver a project overview, providing background on the history and design of Park Avenue Green. Attendees will then tour the building, hearing from additional members of the project team about their work on specific aspects of the design, construction (by Monadnock Construction, Inc), and energy systems. The event will conclude with a Q&A and networking reception.

Project Details:

  • Units: 154
  • Square Footage: 164,000
  • Type of Construction: New - Completed February 2019
  • 34 kW Solar PV Array
  • Efficiency features - uPVC windows with 0.14 U-value and 7" of EPS insulation outboard of CMU block exterior walls
  • 65 kW Cogeneration unit, with three condensing boilers for domestic hot water
  • Project has received Enterprise Green Communities Post-Build Approval

What changes in our Building System (BAS) applications become possible in an age of low-cost, internet-enabled communicating electronics (sensors and micro-processors)? How are we able to tie together more devices and more conditions to achieve better control over our systems and indoor environmental conditions and across portfolios of buildings? What barriers are faced in getting there and what solutions are emerging? Can we bring older systems up to snuff for operating in this new data-rich environment?

These are some of the questions that will be addressed by a panel of experts at our April meeting. We hope you will join us in exploring this important topic.
